Learn how to do buns with pictures and a step-by-step easy-to-follow recipes. 

Buns is a popular snack in Nigeria. Lots of people eat buns but never know they could make it in their own houses. This recipe shows you how.

If you are a buns lover, I bet you are already salivating over the image above, you can do this in just 80 minutes if you have all the needed ingredients together.

I made these buns without yeast; I used baking powder instead. 

I have made a list of all the ingredients used below. We can purchase all of them from the regular grocery store by the street corner.

Ingredients for Buns

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp margarine
3 large eggs
2 tbsp powdered milk

1 teaspoon milk flavour
3 teaspoon baking powder
3 liters oil (for frying)

 

Serving : 4 persons
Preparation time : 90 minutes

Preparation for Nigerian Buns

Step 1
Mix 2 tablespoons of powdered milk with 1 cup of water and set aside. You will need it for mixing the buns batter.

Step 2
In a clean bowl, add 3 cups of sifted all-purpose flour, sugar, flavour, half teaspoon of salt and margarine

Mix properly using your fingers or a wooden turner.

Step 3
Whisk 3 large eggs in a fresh bowl then add to the mix as you can see below.

Making Nigerian buns

Mix properly. Add the milk-water and continue stirring till they are combined. You may not finish the water-milk. if you finished it and notice your dough is till hard, you can add a little water.

When you are done, it shouldn’t be too hard of too soft. It should look like this. Proceed to frying the buns.

How to do Buns - Frying Method

Step 4
Let your oil heat for 5 minutes then fry the buns by pinching and squeezing into the heated oil. You want to try rolling it around your fingers till is becomes round. Then drop into the oil.

Step 5
Fry and remove them when they are turning golden brown.

Frying Buns

Note: the buns could sink to the bottom of the pot when you drop them into the oil but it will rise in few seconds. If it doesn’t rise, it is because your baking powder is bad or small.

Also, it could be the dough is hard and needs more water.

Fry the Nigerian buns in batches. Enjoy.

Note: Nigerian buns differs from what we know all over the world. Buns is a popular road-side snack in Nigeria. In other countries however, it looks more like bread.

You can use any flavor of choice. I used a teaspoon of vanilla flavor. You can substitute with orange flavor or use a teaspoon of ground nutmeg instead.

Buns are roadside snacks in Nigeria, this recipe shows you how to make buns the Nigerian way. I used just 7 ingredients and it turned out perfect. Buns is served hot or cold in Nigeria. Usually, it is combined with soft drinks. They are also served as small chops and desserts.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp margarine
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon milk flavour
  • 3 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 liters oil for frying

Instructions
 

  • Combine one cup of water and 2 tablespoons of powder milk and set aside.
  • Add 3 cups of flour, sugar, flavour, half teaspoon of salt and margarine in a bowl and mix properly.
  • Add 3 large eggs and continue mixing.
  • Add the milk-water and continue stirring till they are well combined. You don't want it watery. See images above.
  • Let your oil heat for 5 minutes then fry the buns by pinching and squeezing into the heated oil. You want to try rolling it around your fingers till is becomes round. Then drop into the oil.
  • Fry the buns in batches and remove when they are turning golden brown.
